Have you ever felt like you are not good enough? We all have. Every day we are bombarded by media telling us what we should have – thicker hair, a flat stomach, flawless skin. The list can go on and on.

According to the Daily Mail, more than half of children use social media by the age of 10. Children are most vulnerable to media influences because at this age, they are becoming self-aware of their appearance.

​It is important to teach girls and boys that they have the power to trust themselves, and not the media. Trusting yourself starts with trusting your body and mind!

Your body is unique and we must encourage tweens to embrace their differences. It is important for youth to understand that they are never going to look exactly like someone else because their body is unique. Conversations about body image help youth recognize and appreciate their uniqueness. If a child is struggling to think of features that make them unique, remind them they have several features!


Their legs make them go places.
Their muscles help them lift things.
Their eyes let them see things.
Their ears let them hear music and sounds.


It may not be an easy task to have a child trust their body, but over time, little reminders play an important role in having a child trust their appearance and themselves.

Like your body, your mind is unique. Everyone thinks differently and have thoughts about what feels good or not. Teaching youth to listen to their good and not so good feelings, help them trust their intuition. It is important to communicate that when something does not feel right, you should listen to the feeling.

Trusting yourself may be a struggle, but you know what is best for you. We need to remind children that they know what is best for their body. Each child’s body and mind are unique and they have the power to trust themselves!
